The humble t-shirt is a wardrobe staple for a reason: comfy, versatile and simple, t-shirts or sweaters are always easy to throw on when you’re not sure what to wear. If a plain top is your go-to item, that’s great, but maybe it’s time to shake things up a bit.
How about instead of wearing a neutral t-shirt, you swapped it for a tee with a slogan or some kind of statement?
It’s still comfy, it can still be worn in lots of different ways, but this top creates an impression that lasts – and not just in terms of fashion. Still not sure?
Below we’ve got some reasons why you should ditch your basic t-shirt for a t-shirt with a quote, message.
Stand out from the crowd
Everyone wants to create an interesting impression on the people they meet and a big part of this is not looking like every other person around you (that and your wit and intelligence of course!).
Seriously, anyone can go and buy a 3-pack of plain black, white or grey tanks – and that’s what a lot of people do.
Why not stand out from the crowd?
A slogan t-shirt is a great way to do this without having to go all ‘Carrie Bradshaw’. You’re still comfortable, but you’ll catch the eye much more. You’re still you, but maybe with a bit more of an impact.
Didn’t you hate wearing a uniform at school? Why wear one now then?
Conversation starter
Another reason to wear these t-shirts is that they help you go from catching people’s eyes when out and about, to actually having a conversation and getting to know them.
It’s the perfect method of learning what you have in common – you might not know someone’s a fellow Harry Potter fan at first sight (and let’s face it, it’s a bit odd if you ask everyone you meet if they are), but if they have a sweater with the Hogwarts crest on it, you’ll know immediately!
Wearing a top with a quote, graphic or joke on it could make someone smile; they might ask about the meaning behind the quote, or why you chose to wear it. They could just tell you how much they like the same band as you, or movie if you have a quote from your favourite film. Whatever their opener might be, it wouldn’t happen if you’re wearing a neutral sweater, that’s for sure.
Make a statement – and make others think about it
Sometimes you just have to get something off your chest – and what better way to do this than putting it on your chest (via your top!)?
If you have strong feelings on a subject, scrap the plain tee and wear one with a message.
Think of the famous We Should All Be Feminists talk by Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche and the resulting t-shirts, or Katherine Hammet’s designs in the 1980s: this kind of powerful statement makes an impact immediately.
Wearing a design t-shirt is an approach to giving you and your cause a voice. A slogan tee makes a bold, proud declaration: you are not ashamed of what you believe, so why not proclaim it to the world? It’s a form of activism, really, and one we should be embracing.
It also helps to get the word out. One of the reasons people might be asking you about your top is because you’ve nudged something in them, made them think a little. A great conversation starter, yes, and also a great way to get your movement talked about.
Show who you are
Choosing an alternative kind of t-shirt makes a statement, sure – it also shows who you are. It can be witty, sarcastic, ironic, serious, confident or whatever you want it to be; it tells others more about the type of person they are dealing with.
Yes, of course it can tell people what you think about an important topic but it doesn’t have to be deadly serious – a slogan top often shows a sense of humour or that you don’t take yourself too seriously.
‘Cos we want to – simple as that!
The clothes we wear should make us feel more confident and more comfortable in our own skin. If we want to drop the neutral t-shirt for a top with a message that we like in order to make ourselves happy, then why not? It’s as plain (or not so plain!) and simple as that!
By the way, what about having a look at our catalog of yoga tshirts? haha
